In order to obtain optimum performance from your vehicle, and to stay within certain engine warranty requirements, you should have your oil changed every 3000 miles. Although this tends to contradict the recommendations by most car manufacturers to change your engine oil "once per year, or every 7500 miles, whichever comes first" it’s important to bear in mind that this recommendation is made based upon the assumption that you will be driving your vehicle under "ideal circumstances."
The fact is, the vast majority of drivers who use their vehicles to make daily commutes, run errands and take the occasional long road trip fall under the "severe service" category. Under these circumstances, manufacturers recommend changing your oil every 3000 miles, or six months (again, whichever comes first).
