When can my child stay home alone?

Experts agree that most children should not be left home alone until they’re about 11 or 12. However, much of this decision should be based on your child’s maturity level.

The best way to determine if your child can be left home alone, next to waiting until they’re the proper age, is to ensure they’re ready by leaving them at home for gradually longer periods of time at a stretch. Here are a few rules you should adhere to:

  • Never leave a child home alone if he or she doesn’t feel secure.
  • Ensure any firearms are locked away at all times.
  • Review emergency situation plans with your child, such as what to do in case of fire, or how to get ahold of you while you’re out.
