Consulting work is frequently confused with contracted work, but there is a definitive difference between the two. Whereas contracted workers are typically hired to perform a single job then move on as soon as the project is complete, consultants have closer and frequently longer lasting relationships with the companies they service.
A consultant is someone who offers their advice and expertise on an on-call, ongoing basis. Many companies hire former employees who have retired as part time consultants, in an effort to continue to benefit from that individual’s expert knowledge.
