Are tanning beds safe?

Many people use tanning beds as a means of "getting sun" without actually exposing themselves to its rays. Most operate under the false assumption that tanning beds, unlike the sun, do not contain ultraviolet rays. The truth is, tanning beds are just as unsafe as direct exposure to the sun’s rays.

Despite claims by tanning bed manufacturers and owners of tanning salons that the UVA rays emitted cause no harm, the reality is that all ultraviolet rays are capable of causing skin cancer and exposure should be avoided.
