How do I prevent kidney stones?

Kidney stones typically affect white males between 30 and 50, but that’s not to say that anyone is immune from developing them. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to decrease your risk of developing kidney stones.

  • Increase your fluid intake, particularly water. People who drink more water are 40 percent less likely to develop kidney stones.
  • Drink less grapefruit juice and soda.
  • Cut down on your meat intake.
  • Alter your diet to increase the amount of potassium and magnesium you consume.
  • Limit the amount of salt in your diet.
  • Cut down on calcium.

If you have further questions on what you can do to decrease your chances of developing kidney stones, see your doctor or consult with a nutritionist.
