Self breast examinations are the first line of defense in the early detection of breast cancer, and should be performed by all women 20 and older once per month. This should occur a few days following the completion of the menstrual cycle, however women who experience irregular or no cycles should perform the exam on the same day each month.
In addition to self examination, all women 20 and older should have their doctors perform yearly scheduled breast examinations.
It’s important to remember that self examination should never take the place of yearly mammograms, which are recommended every 1 to 2 years for all women ages 40 and older. Contact a physician to make an appointment.
