How do I clean my dryer vent?

Dryer vents, which run from the back of your clothes dryer into the wall and end in a vent on the exterior of your home, should be cleaned out every couple of years to ensure proper operation. Follow the steps below to clean out your dryer vent.

  1. Unplug your dryer. (Important: Gas dryers require you to also shut off the gas line.)
  2. Access the back of your dryer, and loosen the vent clamp from the back to slide it off.
  3. Remove any lint from the back of your dryer and from inside of the vent tube by hand. If this doesn’t sound like fun, you can use a vacuum cleaner.
  4. Reconnect the vent hose to the dryer.
  5. Perform the same functions listed above to the exterior vent, removing lint by hand or with the help of a vacuum cleaner.

Is your dryer still not performing to standard? Contact a washer/dryer service repair company to troubleshoot any issues.
