How do I clean my dryer vent?

Dryer vents, which run from the back of your clothes dryer into the wall and end in a vent on the exterior of your home, should be cleaned out every couple of years to ensure proper operation. Follow the steps below to clean out your dryer vent.
- Unplug your dryer. (Important: Gas dryers require you to also shut off the gas line.)
- Access the back of your dryer, and loosen the vent clamp from the back to slide it off.
- Remove any lint from the back of your dryer and from inside of the vent tube by hand. If this doesn’t sound like fun, you can use a vacuum cleaner.
- Reconnect the vent hose to the dryer.
- Perform the same functions listed above to the exterior vent, removing lint by hand or with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
