How do I refinish hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors that appear worn or lackluster could be revitalized with a refinishing process that can be accomplished in three phases: sanding, staining, and finishing.

  1. Rent an orbital floor sander.
  2. Sand the floor, ensuring the sander is constantly moving and working down from the heaviest grain sandpaper to the lightest.
  3. Once you’ve cleaned the floor, apply stain directly to the hardwood, and allow adequate time to dry.
  4. Apply a polyurethane finish with a paint roller.
  5. Add a second coat after waiting several hours for the first coat to dry.
