How much energy does my appliance use?

Determining how much energy your household appliances use is key to learning how to save money each month on your electric bill. The first thing you need to do is to figure out what your cost is per kilowatt hour. You can figure this out by taking the dollar amount of your latest electricity bill and dividing it by the number of kilowatt hours (“kWh”) that appears on the bill.

Once you have this figure, it’s easy to determine how much it will cost you to run a specific appliance once you learn how many watts that appliance uses. This information is usually found on the appliance itself or in the owner’s manual.

For example, a standard refrigerator uses 300 watts. Divide 300 by 1000 (since one kilowatt is equal to 1000 watts), and your total (0.3) is the number of kilowatts your fridge uses per hour. Since it runs all the time, multiply that amount by 24 hours and you arrive at 7.2, which is how many kilowatts the appliance uses in a day. By multiplying that by your already determined cost per kilowatt hour, you’ll know how much it costs to run per month.

Needless to say, there are some appliances you won’t use 24 hours a day, so calculate how many hours in a month you use them to arrive at their average cost of operation.
