Do I have to have car insurance?

Most states require drivers to have car insurance and to be able to provide proof of insurance at all times during the operation of their vehicles. Although the level of insurance required differs from one state to another, most states compel drivers to carry liability insurance at minimum. Liability insurance pays for damages that you inflict on other drivers, but it does not cover personal injury or damage to your own vehicle.

In states that don’t require residents to have auto insurance, drivers are required to be able to show proof that they can pay out of pocket for any damages they may cause. To find out what level of insurance you’re required to have, find an auto insurance dealer in your state.
