Presently, the length of time that your children can stay on your health insurance varies by medical benefit plan and state of residence. In most cases, insurance companies will allow you to continue to insure your children past age 18 and up to age 25 as long as they are enrolled in college.
Recent legislation states that private and group insurance policies will allow dependent children to remain on their parents’ medical insurance through age 26 – however, it hasn’t yet been clarified who will qualify as "dependent."
If you have questions about how long you can continue to insure your children, contact your health care provider for details specific to your plan and your state.
