My mover is asking for a deposit. Should I pay?

Most moving companies do not ask for payment in full until the move has been completed. However, sometimes you may be asked by a mover to pay a deposit prior to the move actually taking place. Deciding whether or not to pay depends on a couple of factors:

  • If the amount of the deposit is small enough, you should feel comfortable in paying it, as many movers use it as a way to ensure there won’t be any last minute cancellations.
  • If the amount of the deposit is inordinately high (more than a few hundred dollars) you should question the reasons.

In either case, never pay a mover until you have received a signed contract from them detailing every expense you owe, including any deposit and whether or not it’s refundable.
