How can I tell if my pet is deaf?

Another challenge that comes from not being able to verbally communicate with your pet is determining certain conditions, such as trying to figure out of your pet has a hearing deficiency. Unfortunately there are no medical tests that you can do to determine if you animal is deaf, however it’s relatively simple to deduce by observing their behavior.
- A lack of response to audible stimulus is a dead giveaway.
- Try calling your pet’s name to see if they respond.
- Observe their behavior when you return home after being out. Dogs and cats will generally greet you at the door, but if you find your pet still sleeping or otherwise engaged, this may be a sign that they’re deaf.
Certain animals respond to sounds differently. If you think that your pet may have a hearing problem, call your vet to inquire about alternative tests you can carry out.
