What is parvo virus?

Parvo is a virus that affects dogs by attacking their intestinal lining, blocking their ability to absorb food and liquids. More frequently found in puppies than in adult dogs, early detectable symptoms are sluggishness and loss of appetite. As the disease progresses, the symptoms become more obvious and severe, including:

  • Vomiting
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression
  • Lethargic behavior
  • Congestive heart failure

The best way to prevent your dog from getting parvo is to vaccinate him or her regularly. Parvo immunization is typically included with yearly distemper vaccination. If you think your dog is suffering the effects of parvo, contact a veterinarian.
