A running toilet is an annoyance, but it’s not something that requires a plumber to fix. A toilet will generally continue to run if there is an obstruction preventing the flapping stopper on the bottom of the tank from closing. Determine the reason this is happening by removing the toilet tank cover and observing as you flush.
Adjust the length of the chain attached to the flapping stopper. Often the chain may be too short for the stopper to fully close, or so long it gets caught between, allowing water to escape.
You can also make minor adjustments to the mechanisms inside the toilet tank. If you find any of the parts are broken, you can find the necessary replacement parts at your nearest hardware store.
