Why does my toilet flush slowly?

If your toilet is suddenly experiencing a lag in the length of time it takes to completely flush, the obvious first step is to assume that there’s something clogging your sewer line. But before you call a plumber, check for the following possible causes:

  • Check for blockages or buildup in the drain holes under the inside rim of your toilet bowl. You can use a pipe cleaning tool or even a wire hanger to clear away some of the buildup.
  • Check the condition of the flapper lid on the inside of your toilet tank to ensure proper operation, and replace it if necessary.
  • Attempt to remove any obstructions in your pipes by using a plumber’s snake. You can purchase a snake from any hardware or home improvement store.
