Why does my water heater run out of hot water quickly?

A water heater that runs out of hot water too quickly is not normal. If you’ve come to expect this, there are some steps you can take to remedy the situation prior to replacement of the entire unit.

  • Replacing your shower head with one that has a lower flow of water can greatly extend your shower time. Installing lower-flow faucets will have the same effect.
  • Adjust the temperature setting of your water heater, but exercise restraint. This can not only result in serious burns if the water runs too hot, but can also give you a seriously high bill.
  • Have your water heater flushed to remove collected sediment that could be affecting your appliance’s ability to efficiently heat water.

You can contact a heating and electric service to inquire about rates for flushing out your water heater, or purchase a new water heater from a home improvement center.
