For those that know me, Mexican food is my Kryptonite, El Rio in Rocky Mount just opened up (4-23-2013) and I went there for lunch with some friends.
Ummmm, Awesome! The place is very clean, nice. The food, much better than your run of the mill Mexican place. Staff is very friendly, everyone at the table gets their own salsa bowl, ask for the white sauce, its nothing like Ive had before, they make it there, very tasty. The red salsa was good, and the food was fresh hot and NOT over cooked like at other chains around the area.
Three of us ate for about $22 (not including tip) which is great. They seem to have it together there. The decor is clean, it still has somewhat of the Red Clay feel to it but with more stone and a Mexican vibe to it. There are HDTV's everywhere, light music in the background and the staff wears nice button-up's with ties.
Its NOT noisy like El Rodeo is (old VA BBQ Building) which was the main reason why I don't like going there, too much stone and tile there, can;t here myself think.
I love Mexican places and although the ones in the USA are not true Mexican restaurants, this one comes close. My only issue was that the chips were standard, I really like the ones that have sea salt on them, but hey its my own taste. Personally I like the REAL chips, the softer ones like they have in Mexico but its an American thing.
I can see this place giving the other ones a run for their money. In Franklin County, its by far the best one, in Roanoke, its par with Alejandro's taste, just minus the salsa bar. I still dig "Los tres amigos" and their awesome Mexican buffet over in the old Kroger plaza, I'll have to mix it up now.
I really recommend checking this place out if you haven't.
