Artificial turf grass is a wonderful alternative to more traditional lawns. Although the initial installation will require some effort, you'll be able to enjoy its low-maintenance appeal for years to come.
First, you'll need to determine how much turf grass to purchase. This can be accomplished by measuring the length and width of your yard, then multiplying them together to calculate the area.
Before installation, you need to prepare the surface. If you're placing the turf on top of a pre-existing lawn, remove all old grass. Then excavate about four inches below the surface. You'll also want to contour the ground to ensure proper runoff. Now you can add a layer of gravel, which should be tamped down about an inch.
Now you can add your new grass. Roll out one section and line it up with the perimeter of your yard. Secure it in place with landscape spikes. Repeat about once every foot around the entire edge. When adding additional pieces, be sure the seams line up perfectly and reinforce the seams with more spikes. If there is extra material or an imperfect fit along the edge, use a utility knife to trim away any excess. Lastly, use a stiff broom to work a layer of sand into the fibers of the turf grass.
