Get there early to see how the seating and other arrangements have been made. As guests arrive, try to keep them close together instead of them being spread about. You'll always want to communicate with the family about their expectations. When you meet the family before the service, ask them if they want any special wishes carried out, such as throwing flowers on the casket, or throwing sand once it has been lowered. Keep the service short as the family has already been through the funeral. There may be no microphone system for lengthy sermons. You may want to recite certain passages from the Bible. Reading the deceased's favorite piece of scripture can add a personal touch to the service. End the service with a short prayer that includes committing the deceased's soul into the hands of God. Give instructions to the guests on what to do after the service. For example, paying their final respects is a way for them to transition back to their daily routine and begin to process their grief. Following these guidelines helps to comfort the family during this difficult time, and makes the burial service run smoothly.
