You want to make sure you are not going to have a narrow board at the end of the floor and make sure that you take the time to map out and figure out where you want your seams and where you want your boards to end. Using a piece of board under the vinyl board may work to help make small straight cuts, but if you have long cuts that need to be done, you should use a circular saw or a jigsaw to help make those cuts smoothly. A tapping block is a great option that can help you to get your boards flush to one another and can also help to ensure that the seams are locked. You can also rotate the type of plank that you are laying down with each rotation, that way the planks that look similar do not end up next to one another.
