You need two cups of vegetables on a plate, which can be viewed as two fistfuls. Starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, corn, etc. should only be one cup of your plate or one fistful. Finally, for your protein such as fish, meat, or chicken, you're going to want about four fingers instead of a fistful.

You can also think of this weight loss plan as a clock drawn on the plate. From 12 to 3, you can serve four fingers of protein. From 3 to 6, you'll serve the cup of starchy food, and from 6 to 12, you'll place the vegetables.
