Before starting, it is important to keep safety in mind. No roofer wants to fall off while attempting to complete a task. Before climbing up there, be sure to have a harness that can keep one attached to the roof, or install a railing on the sides.
A drip edge is crucial to the process as well. Having a drip edge installed alleviates the pressure that can build up for large volumes of water, preventing heavy storms from destroying any work done.
When attaching shingles, look for the small strip on them. These strips have tar that will activate when heat is applied, allowing them to stay connected to the roof. These should not be covered by other shingles or any debris, as it may lead to loss of shingles.
