If you want to avoid major problems, learning some basic garage door repair and maintenance will save you a lot of time and money. Here are some basic things you can do in about 15 minutes to prolong the life of your garage door.
The ideal supplies for this job are a socket wrench, lubricant, and some cardboard.
First you should lubricate any moving parts on the garage door. The lubricant should have a small tube on the end of the nozzle that allows you to reach small or hard-to-reach places.

Anything that moves should be lubricated including hinges, ball bearings, and roller pins.
Once you have applied the lubricant, open and close the garage door several times to spread it around. This will put lubricant in the places you can't reach with the nozzle. If the rollers don't improve after lubricating, you may want to replace them.
The other thing you want to check is any bolts and hinges on the door. If any of these are loose the garage door may not open properly and may even break. Use a wrench or socket wrench to tighten the bolts that hold these parts in place.
