When you need a home remodeling contractor fast, it helps to have an existing list of options. As this video points out, finding a needle in a haystack, or a good contractor among the bad, means you need to find your local contractors first. Eliminate those that friends and family do not provide a referral for when you ask who they use.

Once you build a list of dependable contractors, begin phoning them to set up appointments for an estimate. Gather at least three estimates so you can accurately gauge how much the work will cost. Estimates, also called job quotes, cost nothing to obtain.
An estimate typically includes a materials list and prices for each material. It includes labor as a single line item. Some detailed quotes for complex jobs may result in individual line items for each required subcontractor. A complex job means a home addition or swimming pool with a deck.
Comparing quotes becomes easier if you require each contractor to use the same format. If a contractor tacks on “extra” services, ask for a second quote that includes only the items you require. This lets you accurately compare quotes to choose your contractor.
