What Are Sober Living Organizations?

Sober living organizations play a vital role on the road to recovery. In most cases, as the video above alludes to, people go into sober living facilities following the completion of some type of recovery program. Another avenue that leads people into sober living organizations is those who have recently been incarcerated or those who have recently been homeless.

In many situations, these individuals have ties to drug abuse and some are actively pursuing or involved in some type of recovery program. As the attached video also cited, not all sober living facilities are created equal, and some are simply another relapse waiting to happen. In the worst of these sober living arrangements, the house manager or other residents of the so-called sober living home are also abusing drugs. The middle-of-the-road type of sober living organizations are commonly called flop houses. These are generally situations where there is little to no structure and little if any active recovery being done, promoted, or encouraged. In the best of these helpful structures, however, real and lasting recovery is encouraged, promoted, and supported. Ideally, the most effective sober living homes have accountability plans in place, good leadership, and an environment of healing, hope, and recovery.
