There's a power wire or several coming from the main panel or power source, which connects to a power box. From that box, you get more power cables that connect to other boxes to distribute electricity properly. Some of the wires from the power boxes will be assigned to the lights, and they can also be called switch legs.
Each power wire has three sets of tinier cables inside: the green, black, and white cables. The black wire is the actual electricity or power wire. To install the switches, you have to split the power wire to turn it into two.
