Get the right tools ready; gloves, vacuum cleaner, brush, screwdriver, and air filter, then shut off the power and close the gas valves before you take further steps. Step 1: Replace the Filter Filters gather dust that causes the heat exchanger to overheat. Remove the filter located on the cold air return duct, and note the direction of the arrows. Draw an arrow at the top of the furnace to guide how you reinstall it and note the dimensions or physically measure the height, width, and thickness and match the replacement with the original filter. Match the filter size with MERV rating for efficiency. Step 2: Clean and Inspect Use an automatic twist lock or screwdriver to open the covers and clean with a shop-vac. Clean the hard-to-reach parts with a clean toothbrush and check for cracks and deformities on the heat exchanger. If you notice cracks, call a professional to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning in your house. Check the burner assembly for scorch marks or burnt wires and call a technician if you notice any. Step 3: Clean the Blower Wear cut-proof gloves and remove the blower cover panels. Unscrew the mounting and take a picture before disconnecting the control unit to guide in reconnecting. Slide out the blower, clean the wheel with a brush then vacuum the assembly. Align the rails, slide the blower back in place, secure the control board and reconnect the wires. Step 4: Reconnect the Furnace Align the covers properly because most blowers have a cut-off power switch if it is open. Open the gas valve and turn on the power. Get a professional if the furnace is not working or the dust smell is persistent.
