Well jetting is the basic idea behind the mud rotary well drilling method. A mud rotary drill rig is made up of a steel drill pipe with slotted joints. Additionally, a larger cutting bit, a motor to spin and raise the drill pipe, and a strong mast to hold the pipe are used. Bentonite clay can be added to water to improve its stability in pulling cuttings out of the hole. This fluid is known as "drilling mud."

Various mud rotary drill rigs can be used to dig a well. The two main types are the table drive and top-head drive. With table drive, the drill pipe is spun by a rotating system near the bottom of the rig. With top-head drive, the drill pipe is rotated by a motor on the top of the pipe. In both kinds, the top of the drill pipe is connected to a machine that moves it up and down the mast. Both types of mud rotary rigs have a swivel at the top of the drill pipe. This lets drilling mud be forced down the pipe while the drill pipe is turning.
