What to Know About Electrical Service Components

If you have an electrical service, there are a few basic steps to take to install it. Electrical services involve a meter (possibly a bypass meter, check your local codes for questions), an SEU, and a weather head that connects the outside power to the inside service.

The meter is owned by the power company and will be connected to your power flow through the rain-tight connector. The line going into the house goes through the meter, connecting the line to the load.

The panel connects the wire from the power company typically coming in through the top of the weather head and going out through the bottom.

When connecting a weather head, make sure that every screw is tightened to the point that you can't move the wires in the weather head box. Understanding all of the components in an electrical project is crucial not just to complete the project functionally, but safely.

Properly completing all electrical service repairs is critical to ensuring the safety of your structure and the people in it. When the box is finished, make sure that it's strapped to the structure within a foot of the top and bottom of the electrical service components.
