Once connected, the attached fence also leads to discolored or unpainted sections that are difficult to match or unsightly holes in the siding if the homeowner wants to move or replace the fence in the future. The alternative is to dig a hole where the fence meets the house and install a post there. Digging the hole can present inconveniences due to rocks, footings, or other obstacles, but there are multiple ways to install footings, plates, and other means of attaching a pole or post to the footing. For example, cedar fence posts can be affixed to the footing, while vinyl posts can slip over poles connected to the footing. In the end, there are a few reasons to attach a fence to a house, many reasons not to, and multiple alternatives.
