Completing their job in extreme heat is no easy feat, but luckily they have creative solutions to lower temperatures during a scorching summer day.
Compared to those on the ground, roofers actually experience the heat more intensely. One reason is that they're elevated closer to the sky, leaving them more exposed. The roofs themselves often absorb and retain sunlight, raising the temperature even hotter for workers.
While many would be tempted to remove clothing layers to keep cool, this is actually the opposite approach that most roofers would recommend. Instead, it's best to keep your head and face covered with a hat and wear long sleeves and pants to keep off the sun's rays. This will also help protect your skin from sunburn. Light-colored garments made of breathable materials are best since dark colors will absorb heat.
Hydration is key. Be sure to drink lots of water. Pause work frequently and take breaks to refuel as often as necessary. Keeping a cooler full of ice and chilly beverages is a fantastic idea.
