How Asphalt Paving Is Made

Asphalt has numerous uses for both residential and commercial properties — from insulation to roofing shingles. That being said, the material's most prominent use is paving roads. It makes for smooth drives and it's easy to repair, should it begin to crack or deteriorate over time. Here's some information about asphalt, pavement services, and more.

Many people aren't aware that asphalt is made with crude oil. Oil is mixed with a few other ingredients such as crushed rocks to make the finished product: pavement asphalt.

Granite boulders are collected from a quarry and transported to a paving plant and crushed into incredibly small pieces. The smaller rocks are then brought to an outdoor storage area. Afterward, they are brought elsewhere via a conveyor belt to be categorized by their size. They are then crushed even further to be less than two centimeters small!

This is all done to create rocks small enough to be incorporated into the asphalt. Asphalt is typically made up of four ingredients: sand, stone dust, five to ten-millimeter stones, and ten to fourteen-millimeter stones. These ingredients make up about 95% of paving asphalt. Pavement services may use differing ingredients depending on the purpose of the pavement. For more information on this topic, be sure to watch this video by How Its Made!
