How to Repair a Running Toilet

In this video, a licensed plumber with 38 years of experience, shows how to fix a running toilet. The first thing to do is cut the toilet's water supply. Once the water is off, remove the lid and tank of the toilet. Next, you need to check the flapper valve. It's a rubber seal at the bottom of the tank, preventing water from flowing into the bowl until flushed.

A damaged flapper valve leaks water into the bowl, causing the toilet to run. If the flapper isn't the problem, check the fill valve. The fill valve fills the tank with water after flushing. To check it, remove the valve from the tank and inspect the diaphragm valve (a small rubber seal inside the fill valve).

The guy in the video is super helpful; he walks you through swapping out a fill valve in your toilet tank. He's like, "Don't sweat it, it's not rocket science. You can do this with some basic tools." He hammers home the point about getting the new fill valve to match up with the height of the old one.

The plumbing repair expert talks about setting up the overflow correctly. And then, he gives this word of caution about the tank lid. He's like, "Be careful with that thing - it's heavier than it looks." So, you're left feeling like you've got this. You can fix that running toilet, no problem.
