The Proper Method for Holding a Serving Tray

If you are starting a new job as a waiter or a waitress, holding the service plate properly may be one of your biggest challenges. Most servers work in a busy environment. They have to move quickly to deliver orders to multiple customers without spilling any of it. Here are a few tips on how to be a pro in holding the serving tray.

The first tip to holding the serving tray properly is to flatten your first, middle, and ring finger beneath the tray. Use your flattened palm and fingers to keep the tray balanced.

Hold the little finger directly under the tray's rim. This position gives your hand extra stability as you walk. Use the thumb to secure the tray further by positioning it on the upper side of the tray's rim. Take care not to touch the food with your finger.

It would be best if you held the service tray near shoulder level away from your face. This position not only gives your hand and torso stability but also clears your vision and helps you avoid knocking things or people ahead of you.
