A Common Fix for a Non-Functioning Furnace

If your furnace isn't working properly, this video provides an easy fix that you can do yourself if you have the proper tools and the right kind of furnace. First, remove the front panel on your furnace and locate your burner box. If the box itself is open, you should see a flame glow when the furnace is turned on. If the flame goes out after a few seconds, you might have a dirty flame sensor. To find the flame sensor, look just behind the burner box for a small panel held in place with a screw.

This is likely the flame sensor, which can be removed with a screwdriver. Turn off your furnace, pull out the flame sensor, and wipe it clean with some fine steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad. If you don't have either of those, a dollar bill should work. Scrub away the dirt on the sensor, place it back into your furnace, and turn your furnace back on. The flame should stay on, and your furnace will work. As always, if you have any questions about your furnace, don't hesitate to contact a furnace repair service near you.
