WELL DRILLING 101, Every Step Explained

There are two main types of wells: vertical and horizontal. Vertical wells are drilled vertically into the earth and are typically used to extract natural gas from shale rock formations. Horizontal wells are dug horizontally through layers of sedimentary rock. They can be used to produce water from tight reservoirs.

The most common method is rotary drilling, where a drill bit at the bottom of the wellhead spins rapidly at high speed to cut away rock and soil and remove it in the form of mud. This mud is pumped back down the same pipe as the drilling fluid and helps lubricate the drill bit and carry away debris. Vertical wells are drilled using a technique known as hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing is a way to stimulate the extraction of hydrocarbons from deep within the earth. It involves injecting large amounts of water under very high pressures into the rock formation surrounding the wellbore. The combination of heat, friction, and mechanical energy break open the reservoir rocks, creating cracks and fissures along the path of least resistance. As the fractures expand, they allow greater trapped oil or gas flow into the well.
