Avoid storing potatoes in sealed containers with restricted ventilation, like lidded glassware or zipped bags. Many people may be tempted to wash potatoes before keeping them in potato storage facilities. However, cleaning them is not necessary. Dry potatoes last longer. Remember, washing them adds moisture, promoting the growth of bacteria and fungi. Scrub and rinse potatoes only when they are ready for use. Store potatoes separately from other farm produce. Many vegetables and fruits produce ethylene gas during their ripening process. This facilitates softening of the fruit and increases its sugar content. Ripening fruits can trigger softening and sprouting in potatoes. As a result, keep fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes, onions, apples, and bananas, away from the potato storage facilities. Studies have not yet been released to show how far potato storage facilities should be from other vegetables and fruits. However, keeping them in the dark, cool, and sufficiently-ventilated opposite end of the pantry can be effective.
