It's vital to turn off the power and refrigerant before you begin. Look at the air filter and change it if it's dirty.

Just ensure the arrow on the filter is pointing in the direction the air goes. When it comes to cleaning your AC, the main problem is often a dirty sensor. It's best to give it a good scrub with a wire brush. While you're at it, you could also try using sandpaper or a pipe brush. Doing this should make things work just fine.

As for cleaning the inside of the unit, a vacuum cleaner and a damp rag should do the trick. If you've got compressed air nearby, that works too for cleaning the circuit board. Flip the power and gas back on to get things going. Then, turn up the thermostat to heat. Once you do so, the motor, gas valve, and fan will all kick in. Keep an ear out for any funky noises.

Remember to change the air filter every three months, or more often if you've got pets or allergies. Also, check the thermostat batteries every fall. You might want to think about getting something to watch out for monoxide.
