First, we see heading cuts. They remove the top of a branch back to a bud at a 45-degree angle to promote growth from that bud. This will cause the tree to grow many more branches from that location. Thinning cuts are used to remove branches from an overgrown tree. These are made at the base of the branch near the collar to stop growth in that area. The tree will then focus growth elsewhere. Releadering cuts are used on main branches to redirect the growth of the branch in the desired direction. This is used mainly to promote outward growth to prevent the tree from getting too tall. Finally, tree trimming services use jump cuts to reduce the weight of heavy branches to prevent damage from other cuts. It's meant to release tension so the branch does not shear away from the tree so the wound is clean.
